Blue Diary

This week I am reading Blue Diary , by Alice Hoffman.  I finished one square of my Yurt Throw, which means I only have one square left to go!!! Then I have to block them, sew them and add the border.  The finished blanket should look like this pattern/progress chart.

I also made a lot of progress on the baby blanket, Anna’s Owls.  I really like how this one is coming out.  And using thing bulky yarn makes it knit up super fast!

A whole lot of knitting going on

Wow, I got a LOT done this week I think!!!

I finished my cowl for my turquoise set and I really like how it came out!!!  Once it was finished it relaxed and got more slouchy.  🙂 And I think I have enough yarn over for some fingerless gloves. But hopefully it will get warm around here soon and I won;t need gloves till next year.

And I started on a baby blanket for my boss, due in August and it is a boy.  I love the owl pattern I keep seeing, so I am doing a variation of it.  I changed it up and it is going SO fast.  I am using Lion brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.  Then I changed that pattern to 5 x 5 owls and added one owl in the center.  Based on my swatch, it should come out to 36″x36″.

I love how cute this is looking!

So it should end up looking like this, where the big Os are owls and the xoxox’s are seed stitch:

OwlDetail

And I have just 3 squares left to go on my yurt throw!!!  I finished just one sqare this week, bu I am getting closer.  Now I just have to order some yarn for the border and figure out how to ad that to this monster!

This weekend, we took the dog to her favorite park where she loves to chase the squirrels.  Lucky for them, the are much faster than she is.  There were finally a few little signs of spring around here and the birds have started to return to the city.

Block & Redesign

I have not been knitting much, so I know I have not made much progress.  This week I started reading The Probable Future and I am almost finished with my Cowl!  I think I just want to make it a little longer so it will slouch a little more.  🙂  The cables for this pattern are from the pattern Alokananda Beret, I had tried to make the scarf, but it kept curling, so I decided to just knit it in the round and make a cowl.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

For my Yurt Throw I am working on, I had been really concerned that the blocks were coming out to be very difference sizes.  So I decided to try blocking a few to see if I could get them to be at least similar in size and it worked!!!!

The only problem is these squares ended up 35×15, not 9×9 like the pattern calls for.  I realized that with squares this size the blanket was going to be HUGE.  So I changed it from 7×7 to 6×6 which will make it 78×90 before the border, a very good size.  I also fond by making it smaller, that i am almost done!!! Only 4 squares left to make!!!  So here is the new redesign:

Yarn Along & A Frozen Island – 3/12/2013

This week was pretty busy, but I made some progress on my turquoise set and I am (still) reading Post Office.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I had wanted to make the scarf like in the Alokananda pattern, but I was having so many issues with it curlying, so I decided to make it into a cowl.  I just took the first two diamonds from the cable pattern (20 stitches) and repeated it 5 times in the round.   I thin the width is good, maybe it could be a little wider, but I think the blocking and finishing may fix that.

This weekend, we wen tout to see what has become of the island after this long frozen winter only to find the river is still iced over!  But from across the river I could see that the dock was still there (I wonder if the barrels have been destroyed by the ice, if so, it will sink when it melts), the outdoor shower did survive and we had left our tent because the river became icy before we could go out to get it, and I was shocked to see ti still STANDING!  This winter has had so much wind, and icy and snow, but the tent is still up!  So I just that is a good sign for putting a yurt on the island 🙂

Yarn Along 3/5/2014

This week I am working on my my turquoise set and I am reading Post Office.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I have not made much progress this week.  I decided I needed to finish the work on my turquoise set. I am using the Alokananda Beret pattern and I tried the scarf ans the pattern called for and found it curled… a lot.  So I restarted twice with different edge and then tried adding a slip stitch and it still curled.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

So I decided to make it a cowl instead, but three times I started and twisted my work when joining it in the round!!!!!  On the third try, I got it correctly joined, so I am finally able to make some progress again.

I hope to have more progress on the blanket next week, but I have not had time to get to it this week.

Yarn Along 2/26/2104

I have not participated in Yarn Along in a LONG TIME!!!!

This week, I finish a square #2 for my Yurt Throw and I am reading As Meat Loves Salt (so far, it is about as cheesy as the cover).

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Wow sometimes taking a break makes you come back and find all of you mistakes 😦

It looks like all of my squares 1,5,6, and 7 are close to the same size, but all of my square 2 are to skinning, square 8 are to fat and squares 3 &4 are to short!

So, if I have to frog them, that is 15 out of 31 squares to redo 😦

Here is where I am at so far:

pattern

I only have 18 squares to finish!  I wonder if so creating blocking cold solve this?  Then again, it is clear we probably will not get to putting up the yurt on the island this year….so maybe I should just take the time to redo all of these squares.

Anyone have suggestions?

Yarn Along 10/9/2013

My Stormy scarf is finished!!  I do like the results. The long exaggerated cables came out awesome 🙂    And my husband loves how soft the baby alpaca is.

I got a new Knitting toy that I love: Block Roll.

I knew I was going to need something like this to make sure I block all the squares for my Yurt Throw to the same size.  It was awesome for blocking this scarf. It still curls a little because the cables go all they way to the edge, but it does curl a lot less now.

I started on a Turquoise Set ( a scarf and hat) for me as well this week.  I had some awesome turquoise baby alpaca in my stash.  I am using the Alokananda Beret pattern, but when I tried the pattern as is, the icord made the first and last stitch very loose and sloppy, so I changed the to have 3 seed stitch for the edge.  Then i found it was badly curling….

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

So I frogged and started over, keeping the seed stitch edge, but slipping the fourth and forth to last stitch on the wrong side of the work.  It appears to have fixed the curling, but I won’t know for sure until it is a little longer.

This week, I am still reading My Sister’s Keeper and I finished 2 more squares for my Yurt Throw.

This completes all of the Loden squares, here is the overall pattern/progess:

A Blustery Island Day + Yarn Along

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSo I did not get any time to post before today, so this post will be an island update as well as a yarn along post.

This weekend on the island, it was very windy and some rain as well 😦  So we did not work on any projects.  We did the usual walk on the island.  We found a Blue Jay feather

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I found some raccoon tracks

Some flowers are still blooming:

I love that so many of the trees on the island have holes form the critters or are twisted (you can only see that after they fall and the bark comes off).

And there was more evidence of fall.

I got a great shot of one of the turkey vultures (and his dinner), but heron was a little harder, I was on the boat so the shot did not quite come out as we were moving.

The next morning, the fog was beautiful.

Everything was wet and cold so we headed home.On the dock, the spider webs looked so cool with all the dew and fog

We were able to get home just in time for the Bears game (to bad the lost)  😦

Ok, now for the yarn along!

This week I am reading My Sister’s Keeper and I made some progress on my knitting.  I got the additional yarn I needed for my Stormy Scarf and I have added to the length.  It think it is almost done!

On my Yurt Throw, I finished (almost) tow more squares which completes all of the wheat squares.

Yarn Along – 09/25/2013

I admit, I have made very little progress this week….

This week, I am reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog, I read half of the book over the weekend and I really like it so far.  🙂

On my Yurt Throw, I only finished one and a half square 😦  The square I am currently working on will complete all of the Navy squares.
